Marion Correctional Institution is a state prison run by the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections. It provides minimum and medium security accommodation for around 2,600 men, although the original intended capacity was only 1452. The facility was was opened in 1954.
In 2012, Marion was the first adult prison in the United States to hold a TEDx event, and has held many more since that first one. Along with the opportunity to participate in TEDx events, the institution also has various self-improvement, vocational and educational programs. These include vocational training in agriculture, automotive repair, welding, and carpentry.
The Institution is also a part of a correctional industries program with a carpentry shop, a metal fabrication shop and and a graphics shop.
TEDx events held at Marion Correctional Institution have been "A Life Worth Living?" in September 2012, "What's Next?" in 2013, "Refolding the Box" in June 2014, "Youth" in November 2014 and "5 Year Plan?" in 2015.
